Requirements to register:

Residence is now determined as of the day one begins living in Tennessee with the intention of making this state their legal residence.

** WARNING** Giving false information to register to vote or attempting to register when not qualified is a felony punishable by not less than two (2) years nor more than twelve (12) years imprisonment or a fine of $5,000 or both.

Requirements to vote:

  1. You have registered at least 30 days prior to an election.
  2. The completed registration forms must be postmarked or hand delivered to the election commission office 30 days before an election.
  3. An application for voter registration does not become official until the Administrator of Elections determines that all required information is complete.
  4. You must re-register:
    • Within 90 days after a change of name for any reason, except by change in marital status.
    • If your right to vote is restored pursuant to T.C.A. 2-2-139.
    • If you are moving into this county from another county or state.
  5. You must notify the election commission in writing or by personal appearance if you are changing your address within this county.

Submitting the Registration Form:

  1. Voter Registration Forms can be picked up at the following locations:
    Dickson County Election Office -- in Charlotte, TN
    Dickson County Clerk's Office building -- Downtown Dickson on Main Street
    Ragan's -- Downtown Dickson on Main Street
    Public Library -- in Dickson on Henslee Drive
  2. Fill in all information asked for on the application.
  3. Remember to sign your application.
  4. The completed registration form must be mailed or hand delivered to the election commission office 30 days before an election. Persons using the Postal Service to deliver their registration forms during this 30 day period should be cautioned to have their forms canceled with the postmark to insure that they will meet deadline requirements.
  5. Change of Address Forms may be received by the 5th day before election day or address can be changed at your new polling location on election day.

  6. The election commission will notify the applicant whether or not the form has been accepted. Approved applicants will receive their voter registration cards in the mail.
  7. Persons who register by mail will be required to vote in-person the first time they vote before they are eligible to vote an Absentee Ballot by mail.

The Election Commission Office has no control over the delivery schedule of the U.S. Postal Service. Therefore, individuals who use a by-mail form to register to vote for the first time should be aware of the following factors:

If you register by mail, it is important that your application be post marked by the registration deadline date.

Individuals who registered to vote by-mail and are voting for the first time since registering must present an acceptable form of identification.
